Dear Dr. Reder,
Dear Dr. Reder:
Do you have any information about people that have some silver fillings in their teeth being the cause of MS? Just checking with the best.
- Patty
Dear Patty,
It is not a problem.
There is no solid evidnece, nor even any weak evidence, that fillings affect MS.

Dear Dr. Reder,
Dr. Reder,
Two questions...#1. Do MS lesions have to be considered "pari-ventricular" or can they be located in other areas. And #2. Can you have Lupus and MS simultaneously?
Thanks in advance, Pat.
- Patty Anne
Dear Patty Anne,
They are random, but have a predilection for the periventricular ares on MRI. There are also cortical spots and spinal cord lesions.
Others will argue, but MS and lupus togheter are almost never seen. There is ONE solid report of both.
Interfeon treats MS, but makes lupus worse.

Dear Dr. Reder,
Dear Dr. Reder: What can be expected once MS reaches the brain stem?
- kathy
Dear kathy,
The brainstem is very important. It is a way-station between the brain and the face, arms, and legs. It transmits sensation to the brain and muscle control from the brain. It also controls balance, eye movements, swallowing, and hearing.
So, MS plaques in the brain stem (and spinal cord) often cause more noticeable damage than lesions up in the cortex of the brain.

Dear Dr. Reder,
I have recently read a article stating that Interferon 1-a Avonex and Rebif are not as effective in treating African Americans. Is there any merit in that study?
- LaVonne
Dear LaVonne,
First--the drugs do work, though maybe not quite as well.
Second, because this is an average, the group a a whole does a little worse. It is possible that there is a subgroup of black "MS" patients who have a form of lupus (more common in blacks), and they would not respond to IFN. So, if this subgroup was removed from the average, the back patients with MS might do well.
