Are there routine lab tests that should be taken while on Avonex
Although the clinical trials with Avonex did not report any drop in white blood cell counts or rise in liver enzymes as occurred in the Betaseron trial in a small number of individuals, it is recommended by Biogen that complete blood counts with platelet counts and liver function tests be obtained periodically during treatment. No schedule for this testing is specified, however, testing frequency was every six months during the clinical trial. It is our practice to obtain complete blood counts with platelet counts and liver transaminase levels every three months during the first year of treatment with either Betaseron or Avonex, and every six months after the first year.
