| HEUGA CENTER'S CAN DO PROGRAM OFFERS HEALTH, HOPE IN PALM SPRINGS |
|
Edwards, CO - The Heuga Center announced today that it will bring its renowned CAN DO Program
for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) to Palm Springs, California December 10-14, 2003.
CAN DO is the flagship program of The Heuga Center, and one of several programs conducted by
the national non-profit headquartered in Edwards, Colorado. The only program of its kind in
the world, CAN DO has brought health and hope to thousands of people and families living with MS.
The CAN DO Program takes a whole-person, and whole family approach to helping people with MS,
including education, nutrition, mental well-being and exercise, as well as teaching specific
life management skills. The Program helps participants set personal life goals as a focal
point for reclaiming their lives, and then gives them the strategies, confidence, and
support to strive for those goals. By limiting the program to just 25 participants and
their significant others, the staff is able to provide personalized attention and care.
A team of 40 specialists from all over the nation conducts the 5-day Program, which
includes individualized in-depth health assessments, seminars, individual consultations,
exercise workshops in the pool, on the Swiss ball, stretching, and learning strategies
for integrating wellness activities into daily life. Each participant leaves with a
personalized program and the life management techniques for achieving their individual goals.
The CAN DO Program in Palm Springs is being sponsored by Act for MS. Founded by celebrity,
Gloria Greer , and other prominent leaders in the area, Act for MS provides critical
support for all those living with multiple sclerosis in the Coachella Valley. Services
include providing specialized physical therapy, education programs, and financial
assistance for mobility equipment, medicine, summer electric bills, and other critical
home needs. In addition, Act for MS provides on-going financial support to leading
research universities working to find a cure for MS, which affects one in 750 Americans.
"Bringing this nationally acclaimed CAN DO program to Palm Springs will provide local
members with a unique opportunity to address the ongoing challenges and effective
management of their MS," said Act Board member and past CAN DO participant, Jim Conway.
The Heuga Center celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2004. It was founded by former
Olympic ski racer, Jimmie Heuga, after he was diagnosed with MS at the height of his
racing career. After six years living the sedentary life recommended for people with
MS, Heuga defied medical wisdom of the day and created a program of exercise in
order to regain his physical and mental well-being. His success revolutionized the
management of MS and led him to start The Heuga Center to share his program with others.
CAN DO Programs will also take place this year in Vail, Denver, Salt Lake City,
and Banff, Alberta. To apply to The Heuga Center's Palm Springs CAN DO Program,
